La où vous ne vous y attendez pas, un restaurant fort agréable:Trattoria Omero à Arcetri

Although it is situated in one of the most difficult areas to reach in Florence, Trattoria Omero is one of the most visited places by tourists thanks to the setting that triggers an imaginary world of good things, a gastronomy shop combined with the beautiful countryside. In the old days Trattoria Omero would be “out of town”. The shop still exists, as well as the original bar and there are still good things to eat. To be honest, before visiting trattoria Omero I had a certain image of the place in my head, but I must admit that I have changed idea after my visit. Let's start with the food, which is not always typical Tuscan as in the case of the culatello Zibello ham (from the Emilia Romagna region) served with a cream of porcini mushrooms: good quality meat, less exceptional but acceptable porcini cream. Superb ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach in butter and sage sauce. The grilled chicken classic was a success, and quite a big portion, while the traditional cod and chickpeas, were a bit too cold. When reheated, the taste and flavours came out right. The choice of desserts is excellent and rich enough to satisfy every sweet tooth. We paid around 55 euro, including an average quality wine, and enjoyed a really professional service. What to say, in a dream world this could be the secret restaurant where you eat well and spend very little. The second is not the case but the rest is true, it certainly is a very pleasant place!

At Trattoria Omero it seems as if time has stopped. Everything is so recognisable and reassuring. The restaurant has been there for more than ninety years, insensitive to the fashions and trends and has always remained the same.
Maybe that's why people continue to come back. They went as children for lunch with their parents and today they bring their own children. Despite the recent restyling, the two large dining rooms have not changed. And the spectacular views of Florence give the restaurant a particularly beautiful light.
Here you eat Tuscan, only meat, no fish. The menu is rigorous, precise, without excess, without deviations or inventions. Traditional cuisine, but made of quality products according to the seasons. "All our products are fresh and local - says Carlo, who runs the restaurant with Roberto and Rosanna - from the cheeses to the meats."
The pasta is homemade and the same goes for the desserts, the rest is bought locally. Unlike many of today's small, dark and sometimes suffocating restaurants, here the particular light and space are added values. Typical for the historical restaurants, just like a capacity of 150 persons can be hard to find today.
One voluntarily visits the area of Pian dei Giullari because Omero is one of those places where you rediscover the traditional Tuscan flavours and simplicity of friendly and never intrusive service. The price level is average, for a complete meal (without wine) one will spend around 40 €.
The wine list is interesting, and focused mainly on products from Tuscany with the right prices.
But Omero is also a gastronomy shop. In fact, that’s where it all began just over a century ago. The counter is still placed at the entrance of the room where you can stop for food shopping, or just enjoying a snack. The products and the opening hours are the same as the restaurant. It is recommended to book a table in advance.
Truffe et champagne sur les collines de Florence

In the occasion of a theme evening, dedicated to the “Tuber Albidum Pico” truffle, I decide to visit a typical restaurant situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Florence, Pian dei Giullari. The restaurant is Trattoria Omero. When entering you will be greeted by an army of hams continuing their maturation hanging down from the ceiling, as Trattoria Omero is also a gastronomy shop where you can buy local products before entering the actual restaurant.
Here a couple of charming sommeliers delight us, to begin with champagne Brochet Hervieux extra burner premier cru. Aldo Fiordelli, author of “Il buon tartufo” (The good truffle), entertains us with anecdotes about the precious “Tuber Albidum Pico” truffle. Hereafter follows a truffle and artichoke salad with parmesan cheese, gently combined with the previously mentioned champagne. The eggplant pie is a bit neutral in the taste, as the eggplant itself does not stand out particularly, but the truffle add interesting flavours, combined with the Cabreo la Pietra IGT 2007 wine. Initially, the wine leaves us a bit puzzled (the comparison with the excellent champagne is hard to beat), but then left to acclimatize and breathe, shows to be much more interesting than at first glance.
The sliced truffle flavoured goose breast, accompanied by asparagus in zabaione sauce combined with the Village Cabreo 2006 wine, closed the tasting dinner to leave room for dessert. The dessert consisted of an excellent dark chocolate cake with white truffle sauce, in a difficult combination with a good Vin Santo Chianti Classico 2003.
A superb champagne (imported by Folonari, the wine sponsor of the evening), an excellent chocolate cake, an entertaining dinner and good value for money (40€), a restaurant where the service is still very attentive, contrary to many other places where service is taken care of young people who come and go every three month. We left very satisfied!
